Katsuo – Creators EP
Katsuo – Creators EP
Artist/Producer Alex Larkman has experimented with a variety
of musical styles from post hardcore to mainstream pop. However in 2012,
Larkman ventured into the newly pioneered dubstep scene and the brand Katsuo
was created. Set for release January 20TH,
‘Creators’ fuses together a wide range of genres resulting in a truly
unique and compelling record.
Passionate lyrics are layered over punchy kicks and snares
within the title track ‘Creators’. With the addition of jazz melodies and soft,
compelling vocals provided by Nakisha Esnard, the track positively screams
diversity. Slight distortion on the vocals and synth sounds gives the track an
electro feel resulting in an infectious, hooky and upbeat track. A plethora of
production techniques also contributes to the genre variation within this EP.
Second track ‘I Wanna Know’ has teeth. Influences of rock
are exploited through thick, crunchy guitars whilst dirty wobble bass bleeds
through, providing a signature dubstep edge. Vocals are full-bodied and sultry;
however the stimulating and sinful lyrics are arguably the focal point in this
track. Look out for the music video on the 14th January.
‘Secret Supervillian’ employs high energy, emotive vocals
over fast paced electronica. However instrumental diversity is still prominent
with underlying kicks, cymbals and edgy guitar riffs. The powerful, upbeat
vocals provided by American pop-rock artist Zoe Ann juxtapose the dominant
darker vocal almost naturally, resulting in a very avant-garde vibe that is
bound to satisfy and increase Katsuo’s fan base.
Unique and compelling hooks exploit a broad vocal range
within penultimate track ‘As Good as Mine’. Dubstep ‘wobs’ elevate this
particular track into a slightly more pop influenced record, however a jarred
guitar solo provided by Mark Bolton ensures there is still a Katsuo-esque grit
to this otherwise more commercial record. Catchy, fun and indelible.
‘The Wicked’ concludes the EP with potency. Opening with an
alluring acoustic guitar, it’s difficult to predict the direction of this
track. However we are soon hit with thick, warm bass and vast choral
arrangements. A fusion of builds and
breakdowns ensures a monumental intensity to the production, which culminates
in the most alluring and bold track on the EP.
Creators EP is set for release 20th January on
Super Happy Records.
